A Tribute to our Colleague and Friend, Dr. J. Kenneth (Ken) Milne

Saturday, 24 November 2018

Ken MilneIt is with great regret that we share the passing of our founder and a true visionary, Dr. J. Kenneth (Ken) Milne. Ken died peacefully in his sleep November 20th after a courageous battle with cancer.

A highly-respected ‘giant’ in obstetrics and gynaecology in Canada, Ken left a legacy of transformational culture change and safer patient care in birthing units across our country and into the United States. He identified issues in the healthcare environment that needed fixing long before most, clearly seeing the underlying causes of risk associated with breakdowns in communication and teamwork, and set out to do something about it. It was a combination of his insights, talent and determination that led to the creation of the MOREOB (Managing Obstetrical Risk Efficiently) Program.

Launched as a pilot program within the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (SOGC) in 2002, MOREOB is now 16+ years old and remains a breakthrough program in patient safety. Thanks to Ken’s extraordinary vision and dedication, MOREOB has now been implemented in over 300 hospitals and delivered to over 16,000 healthcare professionals.  As a result of this reach, over 80% of births in Canada take place in MOREOB hospitals. The program has resulted in a significant reduction in adverse events and a measurable reduction in insurance claims.

Ken completed medical school at the University of Western Ontario and obtained his fellowship in obstetrics and gynaecology from The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He practiced in London, Ontario for 29 years, serving as the Chief of the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at St. Joseph's Health Care and the London Health Sciences Centre. He was past Chair of the University of Western Ontario's Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Ken served for nine years as Associate Executive Vice President of the SOGC and was a past President of the Society. It was during his tenure as Executive Vice President of the Patient Safety Division of the SOGC that he developed MOREOB.

In 2007, Ken and the SOGC approached the Healthcare Insurance Reciprocal of Canada (HIROC) to expand the geographic reach of MOREOB and created Salus Global Corporation. Ken served as Salus Global’s CEO and leader from 2007-2012.

In 2012, Ken received The Governor General of Canada Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Award for his extraordinary contributions to women’s health and safer patient care.

Ken was a devoted family man and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his large and loving family. The Salus Global family extends its condolences.   He will be sadly missed and very fondly remembered by thousands of his colleagues and patients whose lives he touched and improved. Ken’s was a life very well lived.

Our work together is a part of his ongoing legacy.
